The nine volcanic islands of the Azores archipelago can be found in the between coordinates 37 ° and 40 ° north latitude and 25 ° and 31 ° west longitude. There are about 246 102 inhabitants (2011 census) residing in this insular territory of 2324 km², which lies about 1815 km from the European continent (Portugal) and 2625 from the North American one (Canada).

With a temperate oceanic or temperate maritime climate, the archipelago is divided into three geographical groups: the Eastern Group (Santa Maria and São Miguel), the Central Group (Terceira, Graciosa, Pico, São Jorge and Faial) and the Western Group (Flores and Corvo).
